Join us for a Saturday morning seminar, as Dr. John Gottman, of the Gottman Institute, via video presentation, helps us ask and answer the question: “How do we make the most important human relationship in our life, work?”

Spend time with your spouse or significant other working on building a sound relationship house – starting with the love map.

Learn the dangers of the Four Horsemen rearing up in your relationship.

Does this involve buying two books??

I’d want my spouse to attend, and it may be a hard sell.

Janet Thorpe on 01/18/2012
Maybe. Augh!!! I replied in the wrong place. Oh, well.
Associate Pastor Jesse Skiffington on 01/19/2012

Janet, we’d love to have you and Jerry attend – if you’d like to buy the “Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work” book, we’re recommending that couples share. The Sound Relationship House will be a handout that we’ll work on at the seminar. However, if you’re meeting resistance, you can always come to the seminar and leave the book for another time.

On another note, if you ever reply or write a message in the wrong place, you can simply go back and click the little garbage can next to the post and delete it or click the little pencil and paper and edit your message.

Is there childcare planned for this event (2nd grader + preschooler)? It is okay if there isn’t, we’ll hire a babysitter but just need to know which way to plan.

Liz Sawyer on 01/31/2012

Also, neither of us will be at the church this weekend… is this something we are supposed to read prior to attending or just show up?

Associate Pastor Jesse Skiffington on 02/01/2012

The book, Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work, is the book that we will be offering at the seminar – you can pick up a copy this week or next at the church office – there will be copies available at the seminar as well. No need to read ahead, but you certainly are welcome to do that if you like.

We are offering child care, but I believe it is just for nursery age, I’ll check with the team and let you know. Glad you guys are coming! Spread the word!

Jamie Richard on 02/01/2012

Hi Jesse. I was going to see if we need nursery care for this event. You can ask Amanda about child are for older kids:)

Carol DeVries on 02/02/2012

Hi Jesse!  Just wondering if Dr. Gottman presents “Seven Principals for Making a Relationship Work” from a Christ centered/Biblical perspective? I read the Amazon review which mentioned use of “rigorous scientific procedures”.  So it’s time to Ask Jesse! :)

Associate Pastor Jesse Skiffington on 02/03/2012

Carol, thanks for the question.

Dr. John Gottman is a respected research psychologist from the University of Washington who has studied marriage and romantic relationships for many years. Dr. Gottman is Jewish, so that influences some of his reflections on relationships, but his research and presentation are purely secular. The Making Relationships Work seminar, which features a video presentation by Dr. Gottman, is intended to provide practical tools for healthy relationships that we can wrestle with in the context of our Christian faith.

So to answer your question specifically, no, Gottman does not bring a Christ-centered/Biblical perspective. However, the Discipleship Team believes that Gottman’s research and findings line up with the values and principles that God calls us to in the context of our marriages. Isn’t it great that as Christians we discover God’s goodness all around us!

In May, our sermon series will be focusing on God’s perspective, and a Christ-centered, Biblical approach to relationships.

Hey There,  Arnie and I are plannign to attend and we would need childcare for both Luke & Owen.  If there won’t be childcare for the older kiddos, (Luke is 7) then I need to make other arrangements for him.  Thanks for all you do.

Hi Jesse, I was just clarifying the time this class. Is it 8:30 to noon? I thought I saw 8am to noon in the bulletin at church this morning. Thanks!

Associate Pastor Jesse Skiffington on 02/06/2012

Jamie – if you could have your crew there by 8:15 that would be great! The event starts at 8:30, but we’ll have registration start around 8:00 and may have nursery needs starting at 8:15.

Jenni, we’re hoping to have child care for the older kids as well, but I need to double check before promising anything. I’ll post again tomorrow with an update. Thanks.

Associate Pastor Jesse Skiffington on 02/09/2012

Good news! We have child care through 5th grade – so go ahead and bring your kids! We have some great folks that will be ready to look after them…see you all Saturday.
